An experience in a Belgium hospital changes his life.

GIG HARBOR - Jeff Dullum has been through a lot in his life.

But nothing could compare to his experiences before and after having a live-changing surgery in a Belgium hospital back in 2003.

Dullum pulled up a shop bench at his Gig Harbor home recently and told a tale that led to him walking regularly again, and playing with his three kids without pain.

In November, 2007 our doctor suggested we have colonoscopies, but he told us to call Dave's insurance first to see if they would pay for it. We called and they said, yes, we pay according to the policy.

In February, 2008 Dave had x-rays and an MRI that diagnosed hip replacement was necessary. He now has a "pre-existing condition." Our hospital tried for eleven months to collect the payment on the colonoscopy, but United Health Care choose to pay for the cheaper and later tests and they will only pay for one diagnostic test a year. We paid for the colonoscopy.

Dave was diagnosed with osteo-arthritis in the hips. He was told hip replacement was the only treatment. He researched treatments online and discovered hip resurfacing. Unable to pay the co-pay, he chose an overseas alternative.

Background: While providing superior hardness and improved wear characteristics, hard bearings such as metal-on-metal, or ceramic-on-ceramics bearings have different lubrication properties than hard on soft (metal- or ceramic-on-poly) bearing couples. A failure in this lubrication mechanism in metal-on-metal resurfacing prostheses can lead to squeaking and has been reported by different authors. Other more frequently encountered acoustic phenomena in resurfacing are clicking, popping or grinding noises that patients may experience in different episodes of their prosthesis life.
