Introduction
Some metal-on-metal hip devices that are known to release chromium and cobalt metal ions have been shown to produce toxicological effects. BIOLOX®delta, however, also contains trivalent chro- mium ions, which randomly replace the trivalent aluminum ions in the alumina matrix. Despite being strongly bound to the alumina lattice, it has yet to be experimentally proven if the chromium ions are eventually released into the body. If BIOLOX®delta is completely biocompatible in terms of ion release, it could offer an excellent alternative to metal-based bearing couples.

Today, anno 2014, metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty in general and hip resurfacing in particular is finding itself in the eye of the storm. Despite the fact that an estimated 500,000 current generation metal-on-metal hip replacements have been performed over the last 15 years with excellent results from experienced surgeons, there are reports of increasing numbers of revisions for unexplained pain and soft tissue reactions.

In the fourth quarter of 2008, the ANCA-Clinic opened a new hip center at Rome, Italy. Italian patients are welcome in their own country for consults and/or threatment.
The medical staff of the new clinic are build around Dr. Alessandro Calistri (fulltime) and Dr. Koen De Smet (parttime). For surgery and/or main treatment the facilities of the "Clinica Valle Giulia" hospital will be used.

Lately, we saw a number of alarming articles in the press around the topic of Metal-on-Metal, Resurfacing hip prosthesis, ASR, and metal-ions/debris. We have collected a number of these articles for you, together with a response of dr. Koen De Smet and others:
A recently recalled artificial hip made by a unit of Johnson & Johnson, designed to last 15 years or more, is failing worldwide at unusually high rates after just a few years.
ASR™ Hip Recall GuideDePuy Orthopaedics is issuing a voluntary recall of its ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System. This recall means additional testing and monitoring may be necessary. These systems first became available in July 2003. If you had your hip surgery prior to July 2003, the hip you received is not subject to this recall.

Within the ANCA-Clinic this type of resurfacing prosthesis is only used by a small group of patients. All ANCA patients whom this concerns, have been informed in written and by telephone and have been invited for additional monitoring and testing. If on this moment you haven't been contacted by us personally, you do not fall under this recall group, and you do not need to undertake any action.
With the committee vote in hand, the FDA approved the BHR (marketed by Smith & Nephew) for U.S. sales eight months later. What surprised observers at the time and, we think, laid the foundation for today’s debate was that the data set used by the Orthopedics Advisory Committee and the FDA to approve the BHR came from a retrospective study of, in effect, 124 X-rays. No randomized, blinded controlled prospective trial data.
GIG HARBOR - Jeff Dullum has been through a lot in his life.
But nothing could compare to his experiences before and after having a live-changing surgery in a Belgium hospital back in 2003.
Dullum pulled up a shop bench at his Gig Harbor home recently and told a tale that led to him walking regularly again, and playing with his three kids without pain.
In November, 2007 our doctor suggested we have colonoscopies, but he told us to call Dave's insurance first to see if they would pay for it. We called and they said, yes, we pay according to the policy.
In February, 2008 Dave had x-rays and an MRI that diagnosed hip replacement was necessary. He now has a "pre-existing condition." Our hospital tried for eleven months to collect the payment on the colonoscopy, but United Health Care choose to pay for the cheaper and later tests and they will only pay for one diagnostic test a year. We paid for the colonoscopy.
